Workers at the Kikuyu affordable housing project site.

Construction of the Boma Yangu Kikuyu Estate is underway in Kikuyu municipality.

The flagship project under Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme aims to turn long-held dreams of dignified, secure homes into concrete reality for families across the county and beyond.

The development accesses major transport corridors connecting Nairobi, the Central Region and Western Kenya, positioned approximately 50 metres from the Nairobi Southern Bypass near the Gitaru Interchange.

The mixed-use development spans nine residential blocks and will deliver 1,140 modern housing units consisting of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and studio apartments. The estate will also feature green spaces, playgrounds, a borehole, a commercial centre and a social hall.

Clerk of Works Franklin Koome acknowledged that the project has overrun the original timeline, which is being addressed by formal extension procedures.

“The progress is good now at 40 per cent. Currently low works reported as the contractor awaits time extension, time elapsed is 104 per cent,” he noted.

The project has created job opportunities with  more than 500 local youths actively employed on site and structured internship programmes offering hands-on training.

“I am gaining immense hands-on skills. Working on sites is an amazing experience. The beauty of seeing plans turn into reality is truly rewarding,” said Mercy Muthoni, an intern attached to the AHP and a trained physical planning professional.

The Kikuyu Affordable Housing Project is part of the wider national push that has seen more than one million Kenyans register on the Boma Yangu platform and more than 262,000 units under active construction across all 47 counties.
