Property of unestablished value was destroyed after a group of youths stormed Malaba municipality offices on Thursday, demanding employment opportunities.
The youths forced their way into the offices and ordered staff to leave before vandalising plastic chairs and other furniture.
They demanded jobs and greater involvement in the management of the municipality, arguing that the town generates significant revenue from truck transit fees but offers little benefit to local residents.
The group also called on leaders to engage them in dialogue, understand their challenges and provide lasting solutions. They said they had suffered in silence for a long time and accused the leadership of sidelining and neglecting them.
Additionally, the youths urged the municipality to offer them cleaning jobs to help maintain the town’s sanitation and to strengthen disaster response services to address frequent fire outbreaks.
Acting Teso North subcounty administrator Silas Juma condemned the incident, saying the rowdy group stole five desktop computers, four laptops and three mobile phones, and destroyed eight fire extinguishers.
Juma appealed to the youth to use lawful and peaceful channels to present their grievances instead of resorting to violence and destruction of property.
