At least three passengers were killed on Tuesday, while 14 others were injured when a speeding bus rammed into a stalled lorry along Argwings Kodhek Road in Nairobi.

The accident happened at a drift near the Argwings Kodhek/Oledume Road junction, police said.

This was after a lorry carrying construction materials stalled at the drift while heading towards Kawangware.

Nairobi Head of Traffic Joseph Chirchir said a bus carrying passengers and headed for Kawangware, at high speed, rammed into the lorry, killing two passengers on the spot.

A third person later succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.

The lorry had developed mechanical problems, forcing it to stall at the scene.

It reportedly remained at the scene for hours without being removed, leading to the accident, other road users said.

The driver of the lorry fled the scene.

The injured were rushed to hospital with multiple bodily injuries, police said. The accident caused major traffic disruption for several hours.

Chirchir said police are investigating the accident to take the necessary action.

On Tuesday, at least 13 people were killed in separate accidents across the country, police said.

They included five pedestrians, three riders, three passengers, and two drivers. Police said 18 people sustained serious injuries and were admitted to various hospitals.

On Sunday, a Kenya Defence Forces soldier was killed in an accident in the Kibokoni area along the Mokowe–Witu road in Lamu County.

Police and military officials said six other soldiers were injured in the accident.

The incident occurred after a military Land Cruiser travelling from Mokowe suffered a puncture on its left tyre.

This caused the vehicle to roll and land in a ditch, killing a soldier of the rank of sergeant and injuring six others.

The injured were rushed to hospital with multiple injuries. The body of the deceased was moved to a mortuary pending an autopsy, officials said.

Both the military and police said they are investigating the incident.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise despite ongoing campaigns to address the problem. More than 300 people died in road accidents between January 1 and January 25, police said. More than 600 others were injured during the same period.
