Nairobi, Kenya —Radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has raised concerns about an increasing number of young men in Nairobi experiencing erectile problems — conditions once more common among older men.

Speaking on his radio show on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Mwakideu cited findings from recent studies showing that nearly one in ten men aged 18 to 35 is now affected by erectile dysfunction — a trend he says merits urgent attention.

“This Used to Be an Old Man’s Problem”

Mwakideu highlighted how the condition has shifted from being associated primarily with older age to now being reported frequently among younger men.

“Haya ni matatizo ya wazee lakini sasa hivi si matatizo ya wazee tena,”

(These are problems of old men, but now they are not just old men’s problems anymore.)

He emphasized that the trend is not only growing but surprising many, given traditional associations of erectile problems with aging.

Young Men Turning to Medication

Mwakideu pointed out that many young men are coping with the issue by buying medications to help with sexual performance — sometimes without proper medical guidance.

“Utafiti huo huo, vijana wengi hawa, kati ya 18 and 35 years, wamelazimika kuenda kununua madawa za kuongeza nguvu za kiume,”

(According to the same study, many young people between 18 and 35 years have had to go buy medicines to increase male strength.)

Lifestyle Factors Under Scrutiny

During the broadcast, Mwakideu discussed possible causes behind the rise in erectile problems among young men. He referenced doctors involved in the studies who linked the trend to modern lifestyle habits.

“Madaktari ambao wameendesha utafiti huu wanasema wengi wao walipatikana kwamba ni watu ambao wanatumia sigara, wengi wao wanatumia bangi, wengine wanatumia pombe, na wengine madawa tu ya kulevya,”

(Doctors who conducted this study say that many of them were found to be people who use cigarettes, many use marijuana, others use alcohol, and others just drugs.)

He questioned why such problems are now so common among younger men and whether lifestyle choices — such as substance use — have a role.

“Hivi kwa nini? Why is it happening? Why is it happening kwa vijana hawa?”
