Two men drown while swimming in River Perkerra

Two men drowned while swimming in River Perkerra in Baringo County, police said.

Police said the incident occurred on January 20, 2026, when one of the men attempted to rescue his colleague from the swollen river.

The men had gone for a swimming session in the Kivumbini area when one of them began struggling in the water and sought help to get out.

Another man jumped into the river in an effort to rescue him.

Witnesses and police said both men drowned during the attempt.

Other children who witnessed the incident alerted locals, who rushed to the scene.

Police said by the time the locals arrived, both men had drowned. Their bodies were recovered and taken to a mortuary pending an autopsy, police said.

The police added that the men were from the local area and were identified by residents.

In Sena, Homa Bay County, a three-year-old boy died in a house fire on Wednesday morning, January 21.

Police said the boy’s body was found after locals contained the blaze.

The child was at home with his siblings when the fire broke out. The other children managed to escape.

The children’s mother told police she had left them at home to run errands when the fire started. She said the children were cooking porridge at the time.

Police said the boy’s body was taken to a mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Elsewhere, a man was killed after being hit by a speeding train while crossing a railway line in Clayworks, along the Ruiru–Nairobi line, police said.

Police said the man was crossing the line while wearing earphones and without due care.

The train was travelling towards the city centre from the Thika direction at the time of the incident.

Police said the body was taken to a mortuary pending identification and an autopsy.

And on January 21, 2026, seven people were killed in separate road accidents across the country, police said.

The victims included two pedestrians, two passengers, two riders and one pillion passenger.

Police said seven others were seriously injured, including four riders, one pedestrian and one driver.
