Data from World Data Lab shows the US spent about $240 billion on alcohol, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of total global expenditure.
China ranked second with spending of roughly $70 billion, followed by Japan at about $45 billion. Russia and the United Kingdom recorded similar levels, each spending around $40 billion.
Germany, Canada and France followed with more modest but significant outlays.
