Uganda has implemented sweeping restrictions on communications and digital services ahead of the general election scheduled for January 15, 2026.
The measures affect internet access, mobile VPN services, social media platforms, browsing, streaming, email and messaging services.
Authorities have also suspended fibre optic connectivity, leased lines, fixed wireless services, microwave radio links and satellite internet.
In addition, the issuance of new SIM cards has been halted, while SIM swaps and upgrades are permitted only under strict regulations.
According to regulators, the measures took effect at 6 pm on January 13 and will remain in force until the Uganda Communications Commission issues a restoration notice.
