According to police, the operation followed a report from a member of the public who alerted officers that a body had been seen floating in the dam.

Officers responded to the report, visited the scene, and confirmed its accuracy before retrieving the body.

Police further stated that the body was later identified by a close relative of the deceased.

The body was removed to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death. Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

The recovery in Machakos came hours after another drowning incident was reported in Lake Naivasha, Nakuru County.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross Society said it was responding to a drowning incident involving fishermen in Lake Naivasha.

The agency reported that four people were feared to have drowned during the incident, with one body having been retrieved by Saturday as search and rescue operations for the others continued.

The humanitarian agency said it deployed response teams to the scene shortly after receiving a distress call.

Drowning incidents have been reported in Lake Naivasha in the past, with authorities and rescue agencies previously urging water users to observe safety measures while on the lake.
