Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world, marked by traditions that span centuries and cultures. The holiday commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is observed on December 25 by millions of Christians globally.
The tradition of decorating Christmas trees began in Germany in the 16th century, where evergreen trees were brought into homes and adorned with candles. Santa Claus is based on Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop from what is now Turkey, known for secretly giving gifts to the poor.
The popular song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving in 1857, not Christmas. In 1912, Norway began donating a Christmas tree to the United Kingdom each year as a symbol of gratitude for support during World War II.
Christmas is celebrated in more than 160 countries, though customs vary widely. In Japan, for example, Christmas is not a public holiday, but it is widely associated with gift-giving, festive lights and family meals.
