The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has called on government officers, youth and members of the public in Garissa County to embrace transparency and integrity in their daily interactions as part of anti-corruption measures.

Speaking during a press interview after a meeting with the Garissa county commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo, EACC’s deputy director for Education and public awareness Dr. Emily Mworia said that there was need to prepare the young people for good governance where integrity is core.

“We are here to sensitize the public through a series of activities, including an engagement with students at the Garissa University. As a commission, we acknowledge that 75 percent of our population is the youth, and them, being the leaders of today and tomorrow, we need to equip them with the necessary skills and prepare them for good governance,” said Dr. Mworia.

“Similarly, we are not leaving out the public officers; we will be having a sensitization with the head of various departments under national government so that we promote good practices,” she added.

Garissa County commissioner on his part, said that the government would not tolerate corrupt officials and that those caught would face the full wrath of the law.

“Integrity in public service must be maintained. This sensitization is to all government officers, wherever they are, that we must conduct our responsibilities in line with the law. We are working hard as the county team to ensure that we remain faithful to our duty,” Mwabudzo said.

“Anyone found violating the integrity act will face the law so that we tame them not to repeat the crimes, and also warn others. We cannot build a strong foundation of our nation through corruption,” he added.

The public officers were encouraged to promote transparency and integrity in their daily interactions with members of the public, reiterating that the fight against corruption is a shared responsibility.

The EACC’s outreach in Garissa is part of a broader national strategy to mobilize the public and institutions to participate in the fight against corruption through education, public awareness, and capacity-building initiatives.
