As the festive season approaches — a period often marked by abundance — the contrast between surplus and hunger in Kenya remains stark.
This year, Vibo Eats has launched the Million Meals Drive, a nationwide effort designed to provide freshly prepared meals to vulnerable families throughout December.
The initiative, which brings together restaurants, NGOs, community-based organisations and self-help groups across the country, aims to serve one million meals while drawing attention to Kenya’s deepening food insecurity and ongoing food waste crisis.

During the launch, Project Lead Rachel Mwangi highlighted the troubling contradiction between the food wasted and the families struggling to find their next meal.
“It is heartbreaking that Kenya wastes up to 40% of the food we produce every year — worth over KSh 72 billion — while millions of families go to bed hungry,” she said.
“The Million Meals Drive is our way of bridging that gap during the festive season by transforming kitchens into engines of kindness and ensuring that every donated meal reaches the table where it is needed most.”
Kenya loses an estimated 5.2 to 9 million tonnes of food annually. Each household contributes to this loss, with the average Kenyan wasting nearly 99 kilograms of food every year. Key staples such as maize, potatoes, fish and fruits — particularly mangoes — suffer substantial losses. Meanwhile, up to one-third of the population faces food insecurity or undernourishment.

Mwangi explained that these realities pushed the team to create a model that merges compassion with accountability.
“This entire programme is anchored on a transparent digital process,” she noted. “Every meal is logged, tracked and verified on the Vibo Eats platform — from the moment it is prepared to the moment it is delivered. This ensures no meal goes unaccounted for and every contribution creates real impact.”
Digital Accountability at the Core
To maintain public trust, the drive will rely heavily on Vibo Eats’ existing digital systems. These include real-time meal tracking from participating restaurants to beneficiaries, digitally verified referrals through community partners, delivery confirmations to ensure accuracy, and data-driven mapping to identify underserved communities. A final transparent report will be shared with contributors and partners at the end of the campaign.

According to Mwangi, technology offers a way to protect the integrity of community feeding initiatives.
“People want to give, but they also want assurance that their support truly reaches those in need. This system provides that assurance,” she said
A Call to Compassion
The drive is supported by a network of restaurants on the Vibo Eats platform, each dedicating their kitchens to preparing meals throughout the month. Mwangi emphasized that the spirit of the Christmas season is rooted in dignity and connection.

“No family should miss a meal simply because of circumstance. When Kenyans come together, we can feed a nation,” she said.
How to Participate
The initiative welcomes individuals, corporations, restaurants and community groups willing to contribute meals or support distribution efforts. The goal is simple: bring warmth and dignity back to households that need it most this Christmas.
