Geoffrey Mosiria’s career demonstrates both creativity and impact. According to his own accounts on Lessons at 30, he once used clever tactics to gain access to high-profile events and later transformed Pumwani Maternity Hospital, one of East Africa’s largest stand-alone maternity facilities.

His story highlights ingenuity, leadership, and dedication to public service.

Camouflaging as Security: The Suit Tactic

Mosiria recounted how a seemingly simple strategy—wearing a suit—allowed him to gain access to exclusive events.

He explained that during a previous event with the late president, he noticed that: "every person in suit is walking in"

Meanwhile, he was blocked because he wore a t-shirt. Learning from that, he bought a second-hand suit costing about 1,000 shillings in total (including a coat, shirt, and shoes) and discovered that presenting himself confidently in the suit allowed him to access high-profile events. He described:

During an event in Sagara with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Mosiria and a friend “blended in” with the presidential security detail to gain entry:

"Mimi nimedunga suti  na  Nyakundi amedunga jacket  ingine alafu alikuwa na pose  kama ya karao nimefika pale ameniingisha mpaka pale vip kufika pale sina kiti kidogo tukasimama wakati prezo ameingia  na unajua anaingia na hao makarao. Sasa wakati walifika na Nyakundi amejiposition kama karao na mimi nikaona hapa nitatolewa na mimi nikageuka karao ndio tufanye nini ndio tumaintain hapo president ndio tupate pake."

Transforming Pumwani Maternity Hospital

Mosiria’s most lasting impact came from his work at Pumwani, a hospital previously facing severe challenges in security, operations, and revenue management.

Combating Child Theft

The facility was notorious for child theft and had a criminal cartel operating internally. Mosiria intervened in multiple cases, apprehending individuals attempting to steal babies. He described one incident:

"I was just walking upstairs and I had a child cry; the lady was carrying a baby she didn’t have. When she tried to run, we checked her bag and found the child."

He also recalled other attempts by individuals pretending to be patients or in labor to abduct children:

"Tulimpata kwa ward alipretend aliingia, alikuwa na mimba, alitengea kujifungua, lakini alipokuwa pale kando pia kuna wale waliozaa wako na watoto, hivyo aliweza ajifanye hivyo."

Through decisive action, Mosiria dismantled the cartel and improved safety for mothers and newborns.

Enhancing Security and Streamlining Services

Mosiria introduced stricter security protocols, requiring visitor registration and replacing contracted staff with internal security.

Unauthorized selling inside the hospital was stopped. He overhauled discharge and payment procedures to prevent revenue theft, noting:

"Nilistop mpaka wizi wa mtu anakuja anajifungua ananipa cashi, watu wanachukua hapo wakimrelease, nilistop hiyo."

Patients now had to obtain clearance from the ward, pay at the cash office, receive a stamp, and pass through customer care and gate security, all verifying payments. These measures restored order and accountability.

Improving Revenue and Infrastructure

Mosiria also focused on hospital revenue and infrastructure. He noted that annual revenue "ikuwa inakuja around 45 million per financial year ikashoot almost 150 nice million for that financial year". During his tenure, he implemented streamlined systems and oversaw renovations that made the hospital cleaner and more efficient.

"Tumestream line systems tukafanya renovations hospitali ikakuwa safi na ikaincrease even number of clients wanted to come to Pumwani," he explained, highlighting how operational improvements attracted more patients.

New beds, mattresses, and functional toilets were installed, and sanitation standards were raised across the facility.

Mosiria emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in patient areas: "Kuna kitu moja mimi napenda kwa hospitali hata kwa institution chuo, that's the most important facility in any institution… even in your house."

His reforms not only enhanced patient experience but also elevated Pumwani’s reputation. He recalled that notable figures, including a lawyer and his own sister, an engineer, chose the hospital for childbirth:

"Even my sister… she delivered a daughter in Pumwani. For me, I have a very special relationship… hata mimi nilizwa, nilizaliwa Pumwani."
