Media personality Willis Raburu has spoken about the impact of cyberbullying during one of the most difficult periods of his life—the loss of his daughter.
In a conversation with Ciru Muriuki on Sauti Sessions Dialogue, Raburu recounted how online reactions intensified his grief at a time he was struggling to cope privately.
Recounting the Lowest Point
Raburu described the period following his daughter’s death as his “lowest point,” noting that the online space became a source of unexpected cruelty.
He said that instead of empathy, he encountered comments suggesting that he was being punished for misleading people online.
According to him, the backlash was immediate and relentless, adding pressure to an already overwhelming emotional situation.
He recalled that some social media users criticised him for returning to work shortly after the loss, assuming he was dishonouring his child.
Raburu explained that those comments overlooked the internal battles he was facing and the need to continue with his professional responsibilities despite the pain.

The Online Space and Cruelty
Raburu highlighted how anonymity and distance on the internet give people the confidence to speak harshly. He noted that many individuals forget that public figures are also human and experience real emotions behind the comments directed at them.
He emphasised that the digital environment often amplifies negativity, especially during moments that require sensitivity and compassion.

Speaking during the interview, Raburu said that if he could offer the internet one gift, it would be mindfulness. He encouraged online users to consider the weight of their words, how they express themselves, and whether what they share is true.
The call, he said, is for individuals to exercise caution and empathy when engaging on social media platforms.

Message of Mindfulness
Raburu reiterated that awareness and responsibility should guide online interactions. He urged users to be mindful of the content they post and the potential emotional impact it may have on others.
The media personality noted that behind every public figure is a person navigating private struggles, making kindness essential.
Fans’ Reactions
“God doesn’t punish people like that. Watu wasome Bible please.”
This reaction challenges the notion that personal tragedy is a form of divine punishment, urging people to avoid harmful assumptions.
“I watched this during the recent Sauti Session. No one deserves to be met with cruelty, especially in a time of grief.”
The comment reflects empathy and support, acknowledging Raburu’s courage in addressing the issue publicly.
“We smile at the hardest seasons in our lives... More grace my fellow G.”
This response highlights the silent strength people show during difficult moments and offers encouragement for Raburu’s continued resilience.
