In the age of social media, public figures face unprecedented scrutiny, with every post, tweet, or photo open to commentary — both positive and negative.

For Kenyan celebrities, navigating this digital landscape often comes with a heavy dose of criticism, trolling, and sometimes even harassment.

While some succumb to the pressure, many have developed strategies to protect their mental health, maintain focus, and rise above online negativity. From ignoring trolls to advocating for stricter cyber laws, these personalities reveal the resilience and discipline required to thrive in the spotlight.

“So number one, I always believe that sometimes, it's just people having a hard time and they're looking for an outlet. Number two, sometimes I just believe that they are genuinely just genuine to me,” Raburu said.

He added, “You can’t control what people say about you, but you can control how you respond to it.”

Over time, he has learned that engaging with negative comments is rarely productive. “So I'll leave you to deal with that. I'm sure it's already a bad day for you,” he stated, noting that he now avoids reading or replying to online attacks.

Setting Boundaries and Ignoring Negativity

Rapper Khaligraph Jones has often addressed unsolicited advice and online criticism with humor and decisiveness.

In past incidents, he rebuffed fans who flooded his social media DMs with personal suggestions, famously saying, “Take that advice to your grandmother!” His approach demonstrates the importance of setting firm boundaries while staying focused on his music career.

Similarly, Azziad Nasenya faced significant online criticism this year but chose to ignore the attacks and continue focusing on her career and personal life.

Turning Negativity into Strength and Advocacy

Musician and entrepreneur Akothee has frequently been targeted online for comments about her family, relationships, and business ventures.

She has advised her daughters and peers to either block bullies or use the criticism as a source of visibility and motivation. Her approach reflects resilience and the ability to channel negativity into productivity.

Similarly, DJ Pierra, a DJ and actress, shared that online bullying deeply affected her mental health. Hurtful comments about her weight and repeated social media hacking even caused her to lose professional opportunities.

These experiences inspired her to start the Hisia Campaign, an anti-cyberbullying initiative aimed at raising public awareness and supporting victims of online harassment.

Singer Avril has also developed strategies for handling online attacks, focusing on emotional maturity and maintaining peace of mind.

Recognizing that many trolls hide behind fake profiles or act out of rivalry, she chooses to ignore toxic comments rather than engage, demonstrating that protecting one’s mental space is just as crucial as addressing external negativity.
