Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed explosive details regarding a near-fatal attack on the late opposition leader Raila Odinga during the 2023 protests.
Mr Musyoka disclosed that police targeted Mr Odinga’s vehicle with ten bullets. The revelation was made on Thursday, 6 November 2025, during a high-profile visit to Mr Odinga’s grave in Bondo.
The Wiper delegation, led by Mr Musyoka, presented the Odinga family with 150 head of cattle. This traditional gesture symbolised solidarity, respect, and shared mourning.

A Narrow Escape from Embakasi
Speaking at Kango Ka Jaramogi, where the late former Prime Minister was laid to rest, Mr Musyoka recounted the moment they faced mortal danger. The incident took place in 2023.
At that time, opposition leader Raila Odinga was leading protests against the high cost of living, which Kenyans described as unbearable.
Mr Musyoka stressed that he and Mr Odinga had been in the political trenches together. He recalled the dramatic escape from Embakasi South.
“We went, we counted 10 bullet attempts on my brother,” Mr Musyoka stated.
He described the escape as "amazing". Mr Musyoka noted that the orders given that day appeared to be "mainly to kill Raila Odinga".
Armoured Vehicle Saved Raila's Life
Mr Musyoka confirmed that Mr Odinga survived the intense attack only because of special protection. The late opposition leader had been travelling in an armoured vehicle.

"If it were not that he was having an armored vehicle, we would have buried him in 2023," the Wiper leader asserted.

The two leaders escaped and managed to reach the residence of Raphael Tuju in Karen.
Honoring the 'Father of Maandamano'
The delegation’s visit commenced early on Thursday morning after leaving Kisumu. They first visited the Opoda home before proceeding to the gravesite.
Kalonzo Musyoka was received by Mama Ida Odinga. The Wiper leader was dressed in jungle green attire. He carried a spear and a shield.
Mr Musyoka led the delegation in chanting “Jowi! Jowi!”. This is a traditional Luo expression used to honour and mourn great leaders. The Wiper leader previously described Raila Odinga as “the father of maandamano” (protests).
Among the prominent political figures accompanying Mr Musyoka were Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

The group also included Ukambani elders, religious leaders, and current and former Members of Parliament. They laid wreaths and offered prayers at the burial site.
Mr Musyoka insisted that the values Mr Odinga lived for, such as democracy and devolution, would never die.
“Raila will be more powerful in death, I repeat, than when he was alive because he inspired the young Kenyans,” — Kalonzo Musyoka.
The visit concluded with the assurance that the political struggles they shared would continue. Kalonzo Musyoka vowed they would continue to "resist" bad governance.
