This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County took an emotional turn as Kenyans paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Raila Odinga, one of the nation’s most iconic political figures.

During the colourful ceremony held at Ithookwe Stadium and presided over by President William Ruto, a touching moment unfolded when schoolchildren took to the field and formed the words “Shujaa Raila”  a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance.

The crowd erupted in applause, with many capturing the moment on their phones, moved by the gesture celebrating a man who dedicated his life to public service and democracy.

The celebrations also featured special musical performances dedicated to Raila’s memory. A country musician performed one of his favourite songs, “Jamaica Farewell” by Harry Belafonte  a tune the late leader was known to love. The soulful rendition brought a wave of nostalgia across the stadium, with attendees swaying gently.

Adding to the emotional atmosphere, gospel artist Sammy Dee's tribute to Raila was played, its lyrics reflecting gratitude for a life of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism. 

Raila Odinga, long regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential post-independence figures, was remembered not just as a politician, but as a statesman whose resilience shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.

The former Prime Minister was laid to rest on Saturday at his extended family home at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

The former Prime Minister Raila was accorded a 17-gun salute and the ceremonial last post by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in a dignified military send-off.

The full military honours were conducted in line with the presidential proclamation issued by President William Ruto immediately after Raila’s death was announced.

The directive ordered that the veteran opposition leader and statesman be given an official funeral with full national and military honours, befitting his contribution to the country.

At the ceremony, the casket draped in the Kenyan flag rested under tight military guard as close family members and leaders gathered at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, the final resting place of Raila’s father, Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

At exactly 4.53 p.m, the KDF artillery unit fired 17 rounds into the air, each blast echoing across the fields of Bondo, symbolizing the nation’s deep respect for Raila’s lifelong service to democracy, justice, and freedom.

Moments later, a lone military bugler sounded the last post, the traditional bugle call marking the end of a soldier’s duty.
