The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga paid deeply emotional tributes during his State funeral service today at JOOUST, Bondo, celebrating his life as a man well lived and a steadfast patriot.

Raila Odinga Junior confirmed the immense national and global outpouring of grief since his father’s passing on October 15 while undergoing treatment in India.

“We are no longer mourning Jakom, but we are celebrating his life today as we give him a final send off,” Raila Junior said, hailing his late father as a steadfast Pan-Africanist and a democrat who fought tirelessly for the country's freedom.

He extended gratitude on behalf of the family to the national government for the extensive support provided during the final journey. “We have received support from President [William] Ruto and the government, which has enabled us to give our father a decent send-off befitting his stature,” he added.

Emotional Tributes from Daughters

Winnie Odinga specifically thanked President William Ruto for standing with the family during their period of loss.

“We honour you for the support and good work to our family. The King is gone; long live the crown,” she stated, in one of the most poignant moments of the service.

Rosemary Odinga eulogised her father as a loving man who took good care of his children. She challenged Kenyans to emulate Raila's virtues, particularly his commitment to championing democracy and the rights of Kenyans.

Both Winnie and Rosemary also thanked the staff who served the late premier, acknowledging their commitment and good care of their father throughout his political life.

Ruth Odinga Recalls Lifelong Sacrifice

The late former Prime Minister’s younger sister, Ruth Odinga, delivered a raw and deeply emotional tribute that focused on her brother’s lifelong suffering for the country.

With a visibly trembling voice, Ruth recalled Raila’s immense struggles in the fight for democracy, which came at a deep personal and familial cost.

“My heart is heavy, my heart is in pain,” she began. “You have suffered for this country, and many could not see it. Go rest now, my brother. You have done your part.”

She added that Raila’s dedication was unwavering, even in his last moments. “Our family has suffered because he sacrificed himself for Kenya. He died still crying for the country,” she said, her voice breaking with emotion.

Ruth lamented the sight of her strong brother lying lifeless after years of tireless struggle: “It’s not easy to see someone as strong as him lying there.”

In a powerful closing statement, Ruth urged members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to honour Raila’s legacy by remaining united and strong. “ODM must remain one. That’s what he stood for; unity, peace, and justice for all,” she insisted.

The State funeral service has drawn numerous high-profile figures from Kenya and beyond, including President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
