Lupita Nyong'o is an Oscar-winning actress, but she’s also been living with a condition that affects countless women around the world: uterine fibroids.
In a recent Instagram post, she opened up about her decade-long journey, sharing some crucial lessons she's learned along the way.
It's Not Your Fault
When Lupita was first diagnosed, she blamed herself. She thought she had done something wrong, but she later discovered that fibroids can be hereditary.

It was a shock to learn that some of her own family members had also lived with the condition.
“I wish I knew from day one that they are not my fault! I spent so much time blaming myself when in fact it runs in my family.”
The Importance of Early Detection
Lupita's biggest takeaway is the value of early detection. Finding fibroids early on can open up a wider range of treatment options.

She also gave some helpful advice for anyone going through a similar experience:

Bring a friend or family member to your doctor's appointments.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Always seek a second opinion.
A Post-Oscar Discovery
This isn't the first time Lupita has spoken out about her health. She previously revealed that she underwent surgery to remove 30 fibroids just after winning her Academy Award in 2014.

"In March 2014, I won an Academy Award. That same year, I discovered I had uterine fibroids. Thirty fibroids. I had surgery to remove them," she wrote.
A Common Condition
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that can vary in size. They can be as small as a pea or as large as a melon. While some women have no symptoms, others experience heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and even fertility issues.
