A signature collection drive has begun in Nairobi, spearheaded by Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai, to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The move comes as a number of Nairobi MCAs have begun the process of collecting signatures to initiate the impeachment process.

A Growing Chorus of Dissent

Over the past weekend, a group of MCAs gathered to begin the signature collection process. The event, captured in a video clip, showed the group singing a song as they began their efforts.

“Nairobi County MCAs will convene today, Sept 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the County Assembly to finalize collecting 100+ signatures in the “100 Signatures Strong” campaign to impeach Gov. Sakaja,” Alai captioned the video.

The motion alleges that Governor Sakaja has violated the constitution and committed various acts of misconduct. One of the key claims listed in the motion is that he has undermined the authority of the County Assembly and failed to implement its resolutions.

Other grounds include alleged violations of public finance and procurement laws.

The Threshold for Impeachment

According to the County Governments Act, a motion for the removal of a governor must be supported by at least one-third of all members of the County Assembly.

Once this initial threshold is met, the motion is presented to the Speaker of the County Assembly. If the motion is then supported by at least two-thirds of all the MCAs, the Speaker must inform the Speaker of the Senate.

The Senate, in turn, has the authority to form a special committee to investigate the allegations. The governor has the right to appear before this committee and be heard.

If the committee finds the allegations substantiated, the Senate will vote on the impeachment charges. A majority vote by the Senate would lead to the governor's removal from office.

The Way Forward

As the signature collection continues, the next steps will be to see if the MCAs can gather the required one-third supportto formally present the motion to the Assembly.

As of August 31, 2025, Alai confirmed that 70 out of the 123 MCAs in Nairobi County had already signed to impeach Governor Sakaja.

“Today, Sunday, 31 August 2025, close to 70 signatures have been collected in a members '-members’-initiated process to impeach Nairobi Governor, Johnson Arthur Sakaja. The county assembly has 123 members after the death of Hon Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward,” he stated.
