Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, is celebrating the reinstatement of his TikTok account after it was recently banned.

Mosiria, who commands a following of over 1.2 million, had his account suspended after sharing a video from a nightclub in Pipeline. TikTok flagged the clip as explicit since it inadvertently captured women stripping.

A Controversial Ban and a Quick Reinstatement

Addressing the issue, Mosiria clarified that the video was part of an enforcement operation, meant to highlight indecent public behaviour and urge authorities to take action.

He stressed that his intention was never to promote explicit content, but rather to shed light on pressing societal issues.

His account was restored following the intervention of Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects, and David Mugonyi, Director General and CEO of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK).

Mosiria expressed gratitude to both, saying, "This outcome not only restores my ability to engage with 1.2 million followers but also reinforces fairness and transparency on digital platforms.”

A Platform for Positive Impact

Despite the setback, Mosiria has been using his platform for positive impact. Through TikTok, he has helped raise funds for medical cases, including KSh 422,000 for a child who required surgery in India and KSh 376,000 for a paralysed mother.

He is also mobilising support for children in need of a throat surgery and a prosthetic leg. The incident came just days after Mosiria announced the closure of a notorious club in Pipeline, underscoring his continued focus on enforcing public morality and safety.

A Tale of Two Bans: Mosiria vs. Moya David

Mosiria's reinstatement contrasts sharply with the experience of dancer and TikTok sensation Moya David, whose account with over 4.5 million followers was banned in March 2024.

Moya expressed deep frustration, noting that his content was clean and rarely violated community guidelines.

He lamented that TikTok offered no warnings or explanations before the ban. Moya further cautioned that banning creators without notice could discourage users from the platform.

He also wondered if malicious reporting could have targeted his account, but added that he was prepared to rebuild his fan base if the ban is not reversed.
