It's a common sight in downtown Nairobi: young commuters grabbing a quick morning drink. While some still stick to traditional tea, an increasing number are reaching for cold sodas, fizzy drinks, or energy boosters.

For many, this has become their go-to "breakfast" drink.

Kenya's consumption of carbonated drinks is on the rise, and it’s now popular at a time once reserved for tea or porridge.

For these drinkers, the appeal is instant energy from caffeine and sugar. However, health experts warn that making these drinks a morning habit can do more harm than good.

  1. Energy Drinks: The Spike-and-Crash Problem Marketed as quick fuel, energy drinks are loaded with caffeine and sugar. Drinking them on an empty stomach can lead to a rapid heart rate, anxiety, and digestive discomfort.

“Energy drinks give you a false sense of stamina,” says Dr. Mercy Kamau, a Nairobi-based nutritionist. “They spike adrenaline, but without actual nutritional support, the body burns out quickly. This is why many people feel drained mid-morning.”

  2. Sugary Carbonated Beverages: A Morning Acid Bomb Starting your day with soda might give you a quick sugar rush, but it also floods your system with simple carbs and acids. This can irritate your stomach lining, spike blood sugar, and contribute to long-term risks like type 2 diabetes and obesity.

“The combination of acid and sugar is particularly harsh in the morning when the stomach is empty,” warns James Otieno, a clinical dietitian in Kisumu. “Over time, it damages tooth enamel and disrupts gut health.

  3. Bottled Flavored Waters and Fizzy Juices: The Hidden Sugar Trap Not all "fruit-flavored" drinks are created equal. Many bottled drinks that are marketed as healthy often contain added sugars, artificial flavors, and preservatives, with very little actual fruit.

“People think they are making a healthier choice because the label says ‘fruit’ or ‘vitamin-infused,’” explains Dr. Kamau. “But if you read the ingredients, you’ll find it’s often just flavored sugar water.”

The Importance of Your Morning Drink

The first thing you consume in the morning sets the tone for your metabolism for the rest of the day.

Sugary and carbonated drinks cause a quick insulin spike, which is followed by a crash that can leave you feeling hungrier, moodier, and more tired before lunchtime.

“Your morning beverage should help you sustain energy, not sabotage it,” notes Otieno. “If you start the day with sugar, your body will keep demanding it for the rest of the day.”
