Fashion designer Bolo Bespoke has strongly denied rumours linking his wealth and flashy lifestyle to the Illuminati or money laundering – commonly referred to in Kenya as “wash wash.”

Speaking on Radio Maisha’s Connect Show, Bolo set the record straight. “My success comes from hard work, not secret societies.”

He also said that he has no competition in the country and his main aim in to sell big in West Africa.

The speculation kicked off again after Bolo’s wife, Mueni, returned from a business trip to China. Some people online claimed her travels were suspicious and hinted at hidden sources of income.

Bolo shut this down directly: “Ameenda kutafuta ndio muwache kusema ni Illuminati.” (“She has gone to hustle, so you stop saying it's Illuminati.”)

He emphasised that their wealth is built on effort, not mystery.

A Tailor Building an Empire

Bolo has become known for creating high-end fashion pieces for exclusive clients and events – particularly weddings. His rise has left many wondering how a tailor could afford such a luxurious lifestyle.

“Most people see tailors as people who only sit on the sewing machine,” he said. “But I run a full fashion empire.”

Today, his business includes:

A dedicated factory

Multiple departments

A team of employees

High-income projects for elite clients

“I don’t even know what money laundering is”

With his rapid success and flashy public image, some have speculated that Bolo might be using the fashion business as a front for illegal dealings.

He dismissed this with a firm response: “I don’t even know what money laundering is.”

He said all the money he earns is from his work, and he's entirely focused on building his brand.

A Gift of Love

Last month, Bolo’s wife surprised him with a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser — a gesture that stunned even him.

She had been planning the gift for months, quietly working with a dealership to make sure everything was perfect.

Bolo Bespoke’s Message

Through all the chatter and speculation, Bolo remains clear on one thing:

“People don’t want to believe that success can come from tailoring. But I’m proof that it can.”

He hopes his story will challenge outdated views of the fashion industry and inspire more people to take tailoring and entrepreneurship seriously.
