Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has found itself at the centre of controversy after abruptly withdrawing from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania on July 21, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the withdrawal was attributed to “unsuitable playing conditions,” with head coach Benni McCarthy allegedly supporting the decision.

The federation said the move was strategic—to allow better preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, set to kick off on August 2 in Nairobi.

The announcement has sparked widespread backlash online, with many questioning the timing, transparency, and integrity of the federation’s decision. Some have alleged miscommunication within the technical team, with reports surfacing that McCarthy’s preferred squad may have been altered without his consent.

“Rumor has it that some players were selected without Benni being in the know—the players he selected were not the ones who travelled. Allegedly…” noted @Gunman1886.

@JAKANJIRA weighed in: “This guy is clueless, why is he denying upcoming players crucial exposure?”

“Harambee Stars wamejitoa kwa 4 Nations Tournament. They only want CHAN,” commented @ogumakevinoyugi.

“Too much drama in this tournament,” added @AlfredFraid.

Now, calls for a deeper overhaul are growing louder—not just of the playing squad, but of the FKF’s internal structure.

“Overhauling Harambee Stars is not just the team—it includes the technical and management bench. The coach expressed his concerns when players he has not recommended are called up to the team. Bado iko kazi,” said @OMosembe.

The decision has not only cast a shadow over the team’s CHAN preparations, but also revived concerns about transparency and governance within Kenyan football.

With less than two weeks to go before CHAN kicks off, fans are left asking: is the team truly ready—or is this another chapter in a long-standing saga of mismanagement?
