Eric Omondi joined mourners at the memorial service held in honour of the late Albert Ojwang’ ahead of his burial, scheduled for Friday, 4th July.
In a video shared on his Instagram, Eric was seen greeting Albert’s grieving parents, Meshack Opiyo and Eucabeth Adhiambo, outside Ridgeways Baptist Church where the family gathered for the emotional service.
He captioned the video: “At Ridgeways Baptist Church to condole with the family of Albert Ojwang’.”
The service was marked by sorrow and reflection as friends, family, and members of the public came together to celebrate Albert’s life.
However, it also became a moment for the family to address the growing misinformation surrounding the financial contributions made following Albert’s tragic death.
Speaking during the requiem mass on Tuesday, 2nd July, the family’s lawyer, Julius Juma, clarified the rumours that the family had received KSh 10 million in donations, particularly from Eric Omondi’s widely publicised Sisi kwa Sisi initiative.
“It has been reported on various media channels that the family received KSh 10 million. I have been asked to set the record straight, and I do so from this pulpit, fully aware of the consequences of lying,” Juma stated.
He continued: “The family did not receive KSh 10 million. What the family received was KSh 2 million from the Head of State, KSh 1 million from Raila Odinga, and KSh 2 million from generous Kenyans who contributed various amounts. In total, the family received KSh 5,060,000. I repeat: it is not true that the family received KSh 10 million from any individual.”
In a heartbreaking development last month, the Ojwang’ family revealed that a large portion of the donated funds had mysteriously disappeared from Meshack Opiyo’s M-Pesa account.
According to the family, the funds—raised through Eric Omondi’s initiative—were withdrawn without consent or clear explanation.
Albert’s uncle, Polycarp Odhiambo, shared the distressing account, saying: “A few days ago, my brother went to withdraw some of the money but faced difficulties because he didn’t have his ID. When he visited Safaricom for help, he discovered that even his personal KSh 17,000 had vanished. Upon checking the account statements, they identified the names of those who had withdrawn the funds. Over KSh 500,000 was missing, including his own money.”
The revelation added to the family’s anguish during an already devastating time.
Despite the controversy surrounding the missing donations, Eric Omondi’s presence at the memorial was seen by many as a sincere gesture of support and solidarity with the bereaved family.
