Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has sparked both laughter and debate after delivering an unusually candid talk on gender-based violence (GBV) to university students in Nairobi.
Speaking to students from the Technical University of Kenya and the University of Nairobi during a joint workshop on GBV, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and the alarming rise in femicide cases, Nyamu stayed true to her bold and unapologetic style.
Using humour to connect with the young audience, she urged men to treat women with respect and tenderness, cheekily remarking:
“You, as a man who feels you need to be rough—let me tell you where you should be rough. It’s even better if you become a bedroom bully and get rough in bedroom affairs. The only roughness we enjoy as women is in bed.”

Her unexpected quip had the audience roaring with laughter, with clips of the moment quickly going viral online. Nyamu then took a more serious tone, condemning violence against women as a sign of weakness.
“If you’re out here being rough in the wrong way—like slapping a woman—you’re down, uko chini tu sana, uko ndogo na umebant,” she said, mixing humour with Sheng to call out abusive behaviour.
The online reaction was swift, with many netizens sharing their amusement:
@cartoon47: “Mwanamke apigwi kwa mkono—hapo I support you.”
@wizpynchez_: “Aloooo ??”
@dj_jacy: “Karen ??”
@favored_sabina: “Huyu cuzo anapenda hii maneno.”
@moha_hass_1480: “Karenzo mwenyewe ?”
Nyamu didn’t stop there—she offered dating advice as well, urging young men to ditch force and instead rely on emotional intelligence and charm.
“Promise me from here, you’re going to be smooth. If she doesn’t fall for you, you can even go to ChatGPT for ideas. Kama hauna lugha, toa lugha ChatGPT!” she joked, blending tech-savviness with life advice
