CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo has rescued a group of protesters in the Nairobi CBD who had been cornered by police officers. His intervention saved a group of protesters during the memorial protests on Wednesday, June 25.

The protesters were filmed begging the journalist not to leave, fearing for their lives. They had been cornered in a blocked alley, allegedly assaulted, and teargassed by the men in uniform.

They accused the police officers of beating them up and then using tear gas on them. "What is going on? Why are you here?" Larry Madowo asked one young man, who was visibly choking from tear gas.

"We were just peaceful. Trying to express ourselves, express our views, but unfortunately, we were cornered, and we have been teargassed," the young man said.

Larry moved on to an adjacent place where the police officers had forced people, including security guards, to kneel.

He also lamented that the place was not safe for keeping people. "You can't keep them here, they are suffocating. What are you doing? You can't do that," he raised his voice after one officer threw tear gas in the protesters' direction. "And he is laughing. He just threw tear gas at the crowded alley and he's laughing at it." He added.

The media personality also exposed police officers in his vicinity, assaulting protesters. "Look at this, they are beating them. These are prison officers who are not trained in crowd control. They are unreasonably violent. They are whipping the protesters. Even the security guards are being rounded up," he said and moved close to them.

The protesters begged Larry Madowo to protect them. One of them said, "We were demonstrating peacefully. We are peaceful. Protesting against police brutality. We only have our phones. We are afraid for our lives."

Larry wondered why the police were keeping the uniformed security guards there. One protester pleaded with him not to go, fearing they would be killed.

"Larry ukienda tutauliwa," one of them said. Which translates to, if you leave, we'll get killed.

The journalist then asked the protesters to leave the place with him. "Let's go," he told them.

Many Kenyans lauded Larry for his heroic move, which saved the poor protesters.
