Senator Karen Nyamu has spoken out against the June 25 protests, saying they were aimless and full of violence. She said she had hoped the protests would be peaceful and respectful, especially because they were meant to honor people who lost their lives during the June 25, 2024, protests.
However, she was left very disappointed when the protests turned into chaos, with violence and tension everywhere. She shared her thoughts on her Facebook page. She said she was shocked by what happened in the streets. She expected a calm and respectful memorial but instead saw violence, fear, and people causing trouble.
“I didn't like yesterday's protest. I thought it was a memorial to remember those who were killed last year. But it turned out to be violence, threats, and mob tension. Why? Did you like it? Just one question, yesterday young people, what did you want to achieve? Last year the course was very loud and clear. This time, you can tell it was the first time protesters were without a course," she wrote.
The senator said the protests did not have a clear reason or goal like last year. She wondered if the young people were truly protesting for themselves or if they were being used by other people with hidden agendas. She warned the youth not to be misled by leaders who have nothing to lose and are only looking for attention.
Karen also said she was very sad to see many businesses destroyed during the protests. She was especially upset because many of those businesses were owned by hardworking Kikuyu people. She said these were people trying to earn an honest living, and now they are suffering because their shops and property were damaged.
She also questioned why leaders who claim to speak for the Kikuyu community had not come out to condemn the destruction.
"Was it your strategy, or did you follow whose script? A lot of businesses were hurt, mainly run by my industrious Kikuyu people. Where is the self-appointed spokesperson for the Kikuyu people to condemn it?” she asked.
She ended her post by warning young people to be careful about who they follow and what they fight for. She said not all leaders have good intentions.
