Malia Obama, Barack and Michelle Obama’s daughter, has officially dropped the ‘Obama’ surname from her name order, and her mother has boldly revealed the reason behind the weird move.
In a revealing interview, theformer First Lady shared her candid thoughts on her eldest daughter's decision to shed her famous last name, opting instead for "Malia Anne" in her burgeoning film career.
This move, which came to light in 2024, highlights a common desire among the Obama daughters to forge their paths, distinct from their globally recognized parents.

Speaking on the Sibling Rivalry podcast hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson, Michelle Obama explained that both Malia, 26, and her younger sister Sasha, 23, have actively sought to "push away from their famous family" as young adults.
Michelle emphasized the importance for her daughters to feel they've earned what they are getting in the world.
“They are young adult women, but they went through a period in their teen years where it was the push away,” Michelle said.
“They’re still doing that. You’re trying to distinguish yourself. It’s important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world. And they don’t want people to assume they don’t work hard, that they’re just naturally handed things. They’re very sensitive to that. They want to be their people,” she emphasized.
Malia's decision to use "Malia Anne" was first noticed when she debuted her film, The Heart, at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. This artistic choice was a deliberate act of distinction.

"Malia, who started in film, I mean, her first project, she took off her last name," Michelle recounted, admitting that their initial reaction was lighthearted, that finally, people will still know her real identity tied to the Obama surname.
However, both Michelle and Barack Obama expressed deep respect for their daughter's ambition to "make her way".
Former President Barack Obama also weighed in on the matter during an appearance on The Pivot podcast in October 2024. Bragging a bit about Malia's accomplishments – her film going to Sundance and other "fancy film festivals" – he confirmed her choice not to include "Obama" in the credits, instead listing "Malia Anne".
Barack shared the humorous exchange he had with Malia:
"You do know they'll they'll know who you are, right?". Malia's response was thoughtful and clear, revealing her motivation: "I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association".

According to the Sundance website, Malia’s debut short ‘The Heart’ is about a lonely man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will. In a “Meet the Artist” video released ahead of the fest, she called it “an odd little story” that she hoped would make viewers “feel a bit less lonely” or remind them “not to forget about the people who are.”
This desire underscores a deeper effort by both Obama daughters to ensure their work and achievements are judged on their merit, free from the powerful shadow of their family's name.
Malia's choice to adopt "Malia Anne" for her professional endeavors is a testament to this pursuit of individuality, a move that resonates with many young adults striving to carve out their own identities.
