Kenyan gospel artiste Alex Nyanchonga Apoko, popularly known as Ringtone, has been granted a KSh 3 million bond after being recently remanded in custody.

This follows an earlier denial of bail by a Nairobi court in connection with a KSh 50 million land fraud case.

Ringtone appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego on Thursday, May 15. The prosecution alleges that on February 28, 2023, he conspired to fraudulently acquire a piece of land belonging to business executive Terresia Adhiambo Odhiambo.

Ringtone and co-accused Alfred Ayora are charged with conspiring to fraudulently acquire approximately 0.47 hectares of land located in Karen, Nairobi (Title No. Nairobi/Block 99/142), valued at about KSh 50 million.

Ringtone claims ownership of the disputed parcel through adverse possession, stating he has occupied the property for over 20 years without dispute.

While Ringtone faces a single conspiracy charge, Alfred Ayora is additionally charged with two counts of perjury—allegedly providing false testimony under oath and submitting a misleading affidavit to the Environment and Land Court.

The case has attracted significant public interest due to Ringtone’s celebrity status and the high value of the land involved.

Both civil and criminal proceedings are ongoing, with potentially serious legal and reputational implications for the gospel artiste.

On May 19, during a subsequent court appearance, the ‘Tenda Wema’ hitmaker secured his release after being granted a KSh 3 million bond or an alternative cash bail of KSh 1 million.

The court also mandated two contact persons as part of his release conditions. Ringtone, born Alex Apoko, was freed after spending four days in custody. His case is set for hearing on August 6, 2025.
