On the evening of May 18, 2025, a dramatic scene unfolded as officers from Kenya’s DCI, GSU, NIS, and other special forces allegedly raided the residences of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Wamunyoro, Mathira, and Karen.

The operation, described by Cleo Malalah (@Cleophasmalala) on X as an illegal attempt to arrest Gachagua, has ignited a firestorm of reactions among Kenyans on social media.

Malalah’s post, which included images of security vehicles and personnel at the scene, quickly drew polarized responses.

Supporters of Gachagua, like Happi Bonaya (@Bonaya_Ke), condemned the raid as a “dangerous abuse of state power.”

Bonaya argued that no elected leader should face such actions without due process, emphasizing the need to protect democratic principles.

This sentiment was echoed by MedhaneMartins (@MedhaneMartins), who labeled the operation a “show of cowardice” by what they called an “illegitimate regime” under President William Ruto.

These reactions reflect a broader frustration with the perceived weaponization of security forces against political opponents, a concern also highlighted in a Wilson Center report on Kenya’s history of militarized responses during political crises.

Others, however, supported the move. Frank Mtetezi (@FrankMtetezi) accused Gachagua of inciting unrest, referencing his alleged role in stoking tensions reminiscent of the 2007-2008 post-election violence that killed over 1,100 Kenyans.

Mtetezi suggested that Gachagua’s arrest was long overdue, a view shared by Redmi (@RedmiWanjiku), who cited Gachagua’s propagation of “hate and tribalism” and disrespect toward Ruto as justification.

Similarly, Joseph Masta (@JosephMasta_) warned that Gachagua’s actions could lead to another wave of electoral violence, urging authorities to take decisive action to prevent such an outcome.

Some Kenyans adopted a more neutral or pragmatic stance. Lewis Mosage (@lewismosage) expressed curiosity about the charges against Gachagua and suggested that his arrest could clarify the government’s intentions, while also admitting intrigue about the potential fallout.

Meanwhile, P.K. Ndegwa (@PeterKamondeN) took a legalistic approach, asserting that “Wamunyoro is not above the law,” implying that Gachagua should face accountability like any citizen.

The reactions on X reveal a deeply divided Kenyan populace grappling with the implications of Gachagua’s potential arrest.

For some, it represents a dangerous erosion of democratic norms under Ruto’s administration, which Malalah described as a “failing regime” bent on settling political scores.

For others, it’s a necessary step to curb a figure seen as a threat to national stability. As Aluda Gael (@aluda_gael) declared, “Wantam is unstoppable,” signaling unwavering support for Gachagua’s cause.
