Kenyan singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Benson Mutua, popularly known as Bensoul, has been announced as the official roastee for the highly anticipated Roast House Comedy event set for May 31st, 2025.

The event will take place in the Red Room at Adlife Plaza, Nairobi.

A “roast” is a comedic event where a person is humorously mocked and teased in a playful, exaggerated manner.

The jokes are delivered by comedians and friends, aiming to entertain rather than offend. All eyes will be on Bensoul to see if he can take the heat or if the jokes will get under his skin.

Bensoul joins a growing list of prominent personalities who have taken the hot seat at Roast House Comedy. Previous roastees include social media sensation Andrew Kibe, who faced relentless but hilarious jabs about his controversial online persona, and actress Sandra Dacha, who handled the roast like a pro, dishing it back as much as she took it.

Media personality Shaffie Weru was also a memorable roastee, with comedians poking fun at his outspoken nature and past controversies.

Bensoul’s Musical Journey

Bensoul first gained mainstream recognition in 2019 as the inaugural signee under Sol Generation Records, the record label founded by the award-winning band Sauti Sol.

His debut single, Lucy, introduced him as a powerful new voice in Kenya’s music scene. His five-year contract with Sol Generation ended in 2023, prompting him to establish his own record label, Lion of Sudah.

Bensoul’s passion for music was inspired by his father, a musician who played bass and electric guitar. Despite initially pursuing a degree in civil engineering at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), he dropped out in his third year to follow his musical dreams.

In 2016, Bensoul started playing guitar for the Kenyan band H_art the Band. During this time, he wrote and collaborated on several hits, including Uliza Kiatu and El Shaddai.

His songwriting prowess extended beyond Kenyan borders when he penned Time Flies for Burna Boy’s African Giant album, which later won a Grammy.

This win technically positioned Bensoul and Sauti Sol as Grammy Award-winning artists.
