For many men, the turning point wasn’t a dramatic event but something subtle that simply didn’t sit right.
User @Udoka_SA shared how his then-partner dismissed a pile of books during a move, saying, “I hope you’re not bringing those — they’re useless.”
In that moment, he said, he realised they were worlds apart in values.
Others were struck by seemingly harmless gestures. One man recalled his date politely thanking a hotel staff member for holding the door.
Though many would see this as good manners, he took it as a red flag — perhaps a reflection of deep insecurities or misplaced expectations.
Some found humour in their disillusionment. @Rhapsodie2017 simply wrote, “She sneezed,” leaving readers to fill in the blanks.

Others, however, recounted experiences that pointed to deeper concerns, including lack of emotional maturity, entitlement, and a disregard for boundaries.
Disrespect, both public and private, was a recurring theme. “She insulted her friends and their children behind their backs,” one user noted, “then disrespected me in public, claiming it was ‘just a joke.’”
Another chimed in that his ex would “threaten, lie, and play the victim” — but begged him to stay once he decided to walk away.
A handful of responses took a more introspective tone. @STV simply said, “I wasn’t qualified to be her husband,” suggesting that sometimes, the issue wasn’t entirely one-sided.
Similarly, one man admitted that despite her loving him when he couldn’t love himself, he knew deep down the relationship wasn’t built to last.
Cultural and moral values also played a major role. Some men were put off by what they considered “feminist behaviour” or having “too many male friends.”
For others, it was a lack of respect for family — such as the woman who openly disrespected her own father, or another who insisted her future husband pay dowry to her mother’s live-in partner.
There were more bizarre confessions too: a woman calling her boyfriend in front of another man she was dating; someone expressing homicidal anger at the mention of long-lost children; another allegedly trying to sleep with her partner’s brother.
In one particularly disturbing story, a man said his ex ended up in prison for aiding a robbery — choosing to protect a man who had just threatened her at gunpoint.
Not all reflections were steeped in drama, though. Some men noted how being with a woman who didn’t prioritise communication or spent more time on social media than with them eroded their sense of connection.
One user said, “Her phone never left her hand,” which was enough to indicate she wasn't present in the relationship.
Unsurprisingly, a few replies touched on body counts, attire, and political affiliations of the women they were dating as potential red flags.

The thread also drew reactions from women. “Reading all these comments… women, do better,” wrote @atallamel. Another, @kithoughts_, added, “This has me clutching my invisible pearls. We don’t hear enough about what some men have experienced.”
