It’s a story that mirrors the spirit of AFC Leopards, a club yearning to reclaim its former glory, and Ambani, their current head coach, is leading the charge.

Born in 1977 at Kahawa Barracks, Ambani’s journey from a promising young forward to an influential coach is a narrative steeped in dedication, resilience and an unwavering commitment to the beautiful game.

Currently serving as the head coach of Kenyan Premier League club AFC Leopards, Ambani’s ascent is not merely a personal triumph but a beacon of hope for a club yearning to reclaim its former glory.

His football career took off in the bustling environment of Kahawa Garrison Primary School, where he first honed his skills.

His educational path took him through Nanyuki High School and Kakamega High School, institutions that not only shaped his academic prowess but also provided a platform for his burgeoning football talent.

His talent blossomed, nurtured by the fertile grounds of Nanyuki and Kakamega High Schools. He was a natural, a force to be reckoned with on the pitch. His first major mark came at Rivatex FC, where he emerged as the league’s second top scorer—a glimpse into the successful career ahead.

“It was during my time at Rivatex FC that I first made a significant impact, emerging as the second top scorer in the league—a precursor to the successful career that lay ahead,” Ambani said.

Joining AFC Leopards, he played alongside notable figures such as Simeon Mulama and Austin Makacha. His maiden goal for the club against Nzoia Sugar FC marked the beginning of a fruitful tenure, characterised by his skillful play and dedication on the pitch.

However, the pursuit of success led him to Oserian FC, where he and his brother Boniface Ambani contributed to the club’s back-to-back Premier League titles in 2001 and 2002.

Ambani’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Financial constraints forced him to navigate through various clubs, even venturing to Oman, where a hand injury curtailed his international aspirations.

“Following the disbandment of Oserian due to financial constraints, I had stints at Nakuru FC, Pipeline FC and Chemelil FC,” Ambani recalled.

“The pursuit of a broader horizon took me to Oman, where I played for Nizwa FC and Salalah FC. Unfortunately, a hand injury sustained during pre-season with Chemelil FC curtailed my international aspirations and ultimately led me back to Kenya,” he said.

He returned to Kenya, briefly playing for Brook Bond FC while doubling as a player-coach, a role that foreshadowed his future.

His transition to full-time coaching at ZOO FC showcased his leadership, paving the way for his return to AFC Leopards.

His appointment as interim head coach after Tomas Trucha’s departure was a pivotal moment. Ambani instilled a sense of optimism, leading the team to a resurgence in form.

He understands the weight of expectations, the yearning for a league title that has eluded the club since 1998. Ambani’s journey is a story of resilience, leadership and a deep love for the game. He’s not just a coach; he’s a beacon of hope, guiding AFC Leopards towards a future filled with glory.

Since taking charge, Ambani has instilled a sense of optimism among fans and players alike. Under his guidance, AFC Leopards have seen a resurgence in form, currently sitting fifth in the FKF Premier League standings with 22 points and only four losses to date.

His coaching philosophy emphasises player comfort and self-worth. He believes in building a team on mutual respect and understanding, where players feel valued and integral to the club’s success.

Ambani’s approach is a breath of fresh air in the often-cut-throat world of professional football. He doesn’t just demand results; he cultivates an environment, where players feel valued, respected and empowered.

His philosophy is not one of iron-fisted discipline, but of gentle guidance and encouragement. He sees his players not as mere cogs in a machine, but as individuals with unique talents and dreams.

His words resonate with the players: “I have just made sure that the players feel comfortable and important,” Ambani stated, highlighting the significance of man management in football.

“ I have helped them realize that without them, we would not have a team and we could not win,” he added.

This is not just a coach talking; it’s a father figure, a mentor and a leader who understands the power of human connection.

He disclosed that management, rather than tactical adjustments, is more responsible for the team’s performance.

“As a parent, I have also contributed more than as a coach. Perhaps even more crucial than coaching at this level is man management, Ambani said.

Ambani’s success lies not in tactical brilliance but in his ability to build a family. He has created a space where players feel safe to express themselves, to learn, to grow, and to strive for greatness together.

He reckons this is the essence of his leadership— a testament to the fact that true success in football, as in life, is built on the foundation of human connection.

“Of course, there are times when I have to be stern and reprimand them, but they understand that it is done constructively, and after we have completed our tasks, we can always laugh,” he continued.

As Ambani looks to the future, he is acutely aware of the club’s storied history and the weight of expectations resting upon his shoulders.

The club, once a dominant force in Kenyan football, has been yearning for a return to glory. The last league title, a distant memory from 1998, hangs heavy in the air. But a new era has dawned, led by a man with a vision, a man who understands the legacy he carries.

Ambani, the new coach, stands at the helm, his eyes reflecting the fire of ambition. He acknowledges the past, the years of drought, but his gaze is firmly fixed on the future.  He sees a team brimming with potential, a blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience, ready to unleash their power.

“Yes,” he said, “the team has been without a league title for a long time and I think it is time for us to compete and turn the tables in order to win the league and appease the supporters.”

“The current season presents a unique opportunity for the club to challenge for the title once more. Our players are excellent. They are eager, they are hungry and they are ready to prove themselves,”  he declares, his voice resonating with confidence.

Ambani’s confidence in his squad, characterised by a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned experience, fuels his belief that they can achieve greatness.

“If you watch them on the field, they are very eager to put things right for the club, even though some of them were not even born when Leopards last won the trophy. We need to keep working and getting better every game, but I think we have the right ingredients for the league.”

The gaffer strives to keep his charges tactically fit, an aspect he reckons helps them to surmount the rigours of congested fixtures.

“All I can say is that I had to sit with the players and show them that matches are more important than anything else. I explained to them that we could not win without them. If you do not get along with your teammates, you will struggle even if you are tactically fit,” he said

Ambani’s coaching tenure has already begun to bear fruit, with the team achieving notable victories against formidable opponents such as Police, Tusker, and Bandari. His commitment to fostering a strong team spirit and encouraging players to take ownership of their roles has been instrumental in this success.

“The team has performed well according to the expectations of the fans,” he noted, recognising the importance of aligning team performance with fan aspirations.

As the season progresses, Ambani remains focused on maintaining the momentum. He denied immediate plans to bolster the team, stating that he has faith in his current group and has no plans to bring in any new players.

“I am confident in my team, and I have no plans to add anyone in the form of new hires,” he stated, underscoring his belief in the capabilities of his current roster.

The coach shared his aspiration to win the championship with the team. As the team’s top scorer when Ingwe last won the league title 26 years ago in 1998, he urged the players to strive toward that goal, stating that it would be a historic accomplishment for him.

“I have instructed the boys to look up to me for inspiration. I have played here, and my goal is to assist them in delivering, not to speculate. The greatest thing that could ever happen to me would be winning the league with this team. It would be historic,” he said.

He speaks of the invisible thread that binds the team, the unspoken language of trust and camaraderie. He sees the team as a tapestry, woven with threads of individual talent, but only truly beautiful when these threads are interwoven with the spirit of unity. “I strongly believe that team cohesion is equally vital in securing us victories,” he said.

His words echo in the hearts of his players, a call to arms, a reminder of the shared dream. They have already tasted victory, their triumphs against formidable opponents a testament to the gaffer’s vision.

But the ultimate prize, the championship, shimmers on the horizon, a beacon guiding their every move. The gaffer, a seasoned veteran, remembers the glory of past victories, the thrill of lifting the trophy, the roar of the crowd.

Now, he stands on the precipice of history, ready to guide his team to a new era of triumph. He urges them to look to him for inspiration, to embrace the legacy of their predecessors, and to write their chapter in the team’s story.
