The newly appointed Harambee Stars head coach Benny McCarthy has his vision steeped in ambition and a determination to elevate Kenyan football to unprecedented heights.
In an exclusive interview with the Star on the sidelines of his unveiling ceremony, McCarthy set his mission crystal clear: to lead the Harambee Stars to their maiden World Cup appearance.
“I had the experience of playing and taking part in the World Cup firsthand. I want to give Kenyan fans that feeling, which is one of the most unique in the world,” he said.
“I believe Kenya has what it takes and they have a slight advantage because they have a serial winner on their side. I hope my players will have the same mindset as me because I detest losing,” he continued.
McCarthy’s own experiences as a player, who has basked in the glory of a World Cup appearance imbue his words with authenticity.
“I know first-hand what it was like playing and participating in the World Cup. It’s one of the most special feelings in the world, and I want to give Kenyan fans that,” he reflects.
This personal connection to the tournament fuels his determination and reinforces his belief that the Harambee Stars possess the potential to compete on the global stage.
His appointment marks a pivotal moment in Kenyan football history given that Harambee Stars, once a beacon of hope in East African football, have grappled with inconsistent performances on the pitch.
Yet, McCarthy’s arrival heralds a new dawn, infused with the promise of hard work, loyalty, and an unyielding quest for excellence.
He said his conviction in the potential of Harambee Stars players is not born of naivety; rather, it is rooted in a comprehensive understanding of the team’s potential and the rich footballing talent that exists within the nation.
“The challenge lies in harnessing this talent and channeling it into a cohesive unit capable of competing against the world’s best. The former Manchester United and Porto star said he would instill a culture of dedication and passion among the players.
He reckons that the ethos of hard work and loyalty, deeply ingrained in the national identity, will serve as the bedrock upon which the Harambee Stars will build their resurgence.
“Kenyans are known to work hard and are also very loyal, and that’s the kind of national team I want to give to them,” McCarthy stated emphatically,” he said.
“The ethos of hard work and loyalty, deeply ingrained in the national identity, will serve as the bedrock upon which the Harambee Stars will build their resurgence,” he said.
Central to McCarthy’s vision is the cultivation of a relentless hunger for success within the squad. Characterising himself as a serial winner who dislikes losing, McCarthy emphasised the need for players who share his fervor and desire to win.
