Religious leaders in Kiambu County have joined millions of Kenyans in opposing bids to amend the Kenyan Constitution and extend the Presidential Term Limit.
The Bill, which also proposes extending the term of service for the president, governors, senators, MPs, and MCAs to seven years, has been under public review since October 2.
It is sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.
The clerics led by the newly ordained Bishop of the Embassy of God Miracle Church Samuel Irungu dismissed the Bill as an attempt by the political class to hold on to power adding that it has already caused uproar among Kenyans.
Speaking after the ordainment ceremony in Witeithia, Juja, Bishop Irungu denounced the Bill terming it self-serving and focused on the interests of the ruling class.
He said that the proposal was ill-bred and geared towards causing public outrage adding that Kenyans are already tired, two years into the Kenya Kwanza regime led by President William Ruto.
The Bishop said that the Bill is unnecessary as the current five-year term provides leaders and officeholders with adequate time to implement policies as well as fulfil their promises to the electorate.
Bishop Irungu further observed that should the Bill see the light of day, it will oppress the already over-burdened Kenyans as it not only seeks to prolong term limits but also seeks to create the office of the Prime Minister.
He called on the Senate to listen to Kenyans, clergy and a section of politicians opposed to the Bill and drop it.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Bishop Amos Bushiri of the Information of Christ Church who said that the political class must shelve their selfish interests for the sake of development and economic stability of the country.
Bushiri chided politicians for turning a blind eye to real issues affecting Kenyans and instead engaging in political spats leading to heated political intolerance that's threatening the country's peace.
He pleaded with leaders led by President Ruto to quel all political battles and focus on serving Kenyans. Rev Meshack Kimuri echoed the sentiments.
This is the second attempt to alter the presidential term limit since President William Ruto was elected in 2022.
The first attempt was fronted by Fafi MP Farah Yakub who sought to scrap the term limit.
The lawmaker proposed the removal of the term limit and instead replaced it with an age limit of 75 years. However, the proposal flopped due a public outrage
