At least 66,106 candidates are sitting the ongoing Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in Machakos County.

Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko said out of the 66,106 candidates, 32,138 are sitting KPSEA while 33,968 others were taking their KCSE examination papers across the nine subcounties.

“Machakos county has a total of 448 KPSEA centres of which 375 are public and 73 being private primary schools,” Ouko said.

Ouko spoke to the Star by phone on Tuesday.

She said 16, 859 boys and 15, 269 girls were taking their KPSEA papers in the county while 16, 351 boys and 17, 617 girls sitting their KCSE examinations.

Ouko said the Grade 6 learners successfully sat their Mathematics and English papers on Monday when the examinations started and were set to take their Integrated Science and Kiswahili exams today (Tuesday) across the county.

The 3-day examinations are scheduled to end on Wednesday when the KPSEA candidates will sit their final papers; Creative Arts and Social Studies.

On the ongoing KCSE examinations, Ouko said 3,317 candidates were sitting their papers in Kathiani Subcounty (1,337 boys and 1,217 girls), 3,557 in Masinga (1,743 boys and 1,814 girls), 2,356 in Athi River (1,139 boys and 1,217 girls), 2,167 in Kalama (1,026 boys and 1,141 girls) and 2,690 in Kangundo with 1,375 boys and 1,315 girls.

There are 4,724 candidates sitting the exams in Yatta Subcounty with 2,436 being boys and 2,288 girls while Mwala Subcounty has 5,747 candidates (2,740 boys and 3,007 girls).

Matungulu Subcounty has 4,484 KCSE candidates (2,042 boys and 2,442 girls) while 4,926 candidates were sitting the examinations in Machakos Subcounty (2,513 boys and 2,413 girls).

A total of 965,501 candidates are writing the KCSE exams across 10,565 centres in the country while 1,303, 913 candidates are sitting KPSEA in 35, 573 centres.

This brings the total candidature for the 2024 national exams to 2,279,414 candidates countrywide.

Unlike past national exams, the government has scaled down police presence inside the classrooms to create a relaxed environment for the students.

Security officers are only allowed to escort the materials.

Ouko said the examinations were going on well in Machakos County without any hitches.

She said as a government, they were committed to ensuring that the candidates sat their papers as scheduled without any interruptions.

Ouko told all stakeholders involved in the exams’ delivery to be vigilant and ensure integrity during the exercise.
