Mover of the impeachment motion against Deputy President MP MP Mwengi Mutuse says he has no personal vendetta against the DP.
Speaking on the floor of the House Tuesday afternoon, the Kibwezi West legislator said he was simply executing his mandate as a legislator in line with the constitution.
“I have no grudge, malice, ill will [or] personal vendetta against his Excellency Rigathi Gachagua. I’m just doing my duty as a citizen of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
The MP read the names of all the 291 MPs who signed the impeachment motion. An impeachment motion needs the support of at least 116 MPs for it to be cleared by the speaker for debate.
Mutuse stated at the onset of giving the notice of motion that he was anchoring the ouster proceedings on alleged violation of Article 150 and 145 of the Kenyan Constitution.
He said he was doing so in support of fidelity to the constitution, adherence to the rule of law and respect to God, qualities he said are the hallmark of a great nation.
“It is this persuasion Mr Speaker that has made me to bring this motion of impeachment against the person of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.”
Mutuse has listed 10 charges against the DP, including gross violations of the constitution, promoting ethnic discrimination and undermining national unity through divisive public statements.
He also accuses the DP of contradicting government policies and failing to uphold his duties as Deputy President, thus violating the principle of collective Cabinet responsibility.
The impeachment motion will need the support of two-thirds of the House, or 233 MPs, for the DP to stand impeached and for him to immediately vacate office.
