The State of Journalist Welfare Survey, released on October 30, 2026, reveals that many Kenyan journalists believe newsrooms are understaffed, although perceptions vary across job roles.
All Administrative Editors surveyed (100 per cent) said newsrooms lacked sufficient personnel.
The concern was also shared by 62 per cent of Reporters, 56 per cent of Senior Reporters and half (50 per cent) of Junior Editors.
Among support staff and junior positions, 46 per cent of respondents in the Others/Support category and 44 per cent of Junior Reporters felt newsrooms were understaffed.
Senior Editors were the least likely to report staffing shortages, with only 22 per cent expressing the view that newsrooms lacked sufficient personnel.
