A World Bank report released on November 4, 2026, shows varying levels of bribery in Kenya across different employment categories, comparing survey findings from 2019 and 2025 among people who had interacted with institutions in the previous 12 months.
Self-employed individuals recorded the highest rates, although the proportion fell slightly from about 48 per cent in 2019 to 45 per cent in 2025.
Among formally employed people, bribery rates also declined, dropping from approximately 23 per cent to 20 per cent.
However, the trend reversed among unemployed people and students, whose rates rose from about 18 per cent in 2019 to 25 per cent in 2025.
Retired people consistently recorded the lowest levels, at approximately six per cent in both survey years.
