European football powerhouses FC Bayern München and AFC Ajax are scheduled to face off in Nairobi on 5 January 2027. The international friendly will officially inaugurate the new Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City.

The fixture was announced by President William Ruto and subsequently confirmed by both clubs on social media. The 60,000-seater facility along Ngong Road serves as a flagship venue for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in the summer of 2027.

Gidi's Perspective on the Nairobi Clash

Popular Radio Jambo broadcaster Joe Gidi shared his thoughts on the upcoming encounter via Facebook.

Gidi urged football enthusiasts and citizens to focus on the broader national significance of hosting such a high-profile fixture.

"Local politics aside, the international friendly between Bayern Munich and Ajax at Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium would be an excellent opportunity to test Kenya's preparedness ahead of AFCON 2027,” he said.

Evaluating National Infrastructure Beyond Football

Gidi emphasised that staging a fixture between two European giants presents a practical evaluation of Kenya’s readiness. He noted that hosting major global events requires a robust infrastructure network far beyond the playing pitch.

"Beyond football, such a high-profile match would attract international fans, media and visitors, giving us a chance to assess our airports, transport systems, hotels, security, hospitality and tourism infrastructure,” he added.

He further highlighted that tournament readiness depends heavily on the overall fan experience.

"AFCON is not just about football or beautiful stadiums. It's about the entire visitor experience, from arrival at JKIA to departure.”

A Full Dress Rehearsal for 2027

According to Gidi, international friendlies act as vital diagnostic events for organizers to refine operations ahead of continental competitions.

"It would also offer Kenya valuable international exposure, showcase our tourist attractions and demonstrate our ability to host major global sporting events."

In his conclusion, Gidi called on national agencies to use the January 2027 match to address key operational areas.

"Let's use such international friendlies as a full-dress rehearsal to identify gaps, improve our services and showcase Kenya as a world-class sporting and tourism destination."

Official Statements from Amsterdam and Munich

Both European clubs confirmed their participation on social media. AFC Ajax posted:

"We’re proud to announce that we will face FC Bayern in the opening match of the new Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, Kenya.”

FC Bayern München titled its official statement "Inauguration of the National Stadium in Kenya.”

The German champions noted:

The Stadium and AFCON 2027

The Raila Odinga International Stadium is Kenya's first major purpose-built international stadium constructed since Kasarani Stadium opened in 1987. Built as part of the East Africa Pamoja Bid, the 60,000-capacity venue will host key matches and ceremonies during AFCON 2027.

The January 5 fixture between Bayern Munich and Ajax gives national organisers their first full operational test of the new complex.
