Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga visits ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga as he recuperates on October 29, 2026 / HANDOUT

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has shared an update on ODM leader Oburu Oginga’s recovery, saying she was happy to find him strong and in high spirits after meeting him on Thursday.

In a statement on Thursday, Wanga said she had caught up with the Siaya Senator earlier in the day and was encouraged by his condition.

“Catching up with ODM party leader Oburu Oginga earlier today. Happy to see him strong and in very high spirits,” she said.

Her remarks come amid public interest in Oburu’s wellbeing following his hospitalisation and subsequent discharge as he recovers.

On Tuesday, Kibra parliamentary aspirant Raila Odinga Junior visited Oburu at his home, sharing a photograph of the two on social media accompanied by the message, “God is good.”

The visit came barely a week after ODM deputy party leader and Kisii Governor Simba Arati also visited Oburu following his discharge from hospital on October 19, 2026.

Oburu’s hospitalisation attracted public attention as it came shortly before events marking the first anniversary of the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The Siaya Senator was also recovering when he marked his birthday on October 15, the same date Raila died.

During the birthday celebrations, Oburu thanked his family, Nairobi Hospital staff, ODM members and his personal staff for organising a surprise party and supporting him during his recovery.

He singled out his spouses, Ann Oburu and Judith Oburu, as well as ODM trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, for their care and presence.

“Special thanks go to my domestic staff at home and the hard-working team at Pawaa Centre for your dedication, loyalty, and thoughtfulness in putting this together. Your love and presence have made this solemn yet special day truly comforting. May God bless you all abundantly,” he said.

Oburu has disclosed that his doctors advised him to observe strict bed rest and avoid public appearances as he recovers.

Despite his absence from public engagements, he has sought to reassure ODM members that the party’s operations would continue uninterrupted, saying its leadership structures remained active and capable of steering the movement.

He has also defended ODM’s broad-based political arrangement, dismissing claims that it amounted to a betrayal of the party’s historical struggle.

“I want to confirm to you today that the Orange Democratic Movement's current broad-based approach is neither a fallacy nor a betrayal of our long-standing struggle; rather, it is a sophisticated, deliberate continuation of it,” he said.
