Veteran Kenyan media personality Joyce Gituro has shared details of how her lastborn son, Homeboyz Radio presenter Jakes Nyanjom, handled his first romantic heartbreak.
Speaking on the Lessons at 30 podcast hosted by Dr Ofweneke, Gituro reflected on the emotional ordeal her 22-year-old son experienced.
She noted that Jakes, who followed her into broadcasting, is someone who "loves too much" when in a relationship.
Devastated by First Heartbreak
Recalling the incident, Gituro revealed that her son returned home completely overwhelmed after difficulties arose in his relationship.
He was unable to step outside the house as he struggled to cope with the emotional pain.

"He came home; he couldn't leave the house," Gituro stated. "He was crying like a baby.”
A Mother's Comforting Gesture
Unsure of how best to handle his distress at that moment, Gituro offered physical comfort and a cold drink.
"I had to hug him," she shared. "I just went to the fridge, picked a soda and gave him and told him, 'It's okay. What can I do?'"
Gituro explained that the emotional turmoil stemmed from unrealistic demands and conditions set by the girlfriend, who was threatening to walk away.
Candid Words of Advice
Observing that her son was struggling to meet those demands, Gituro decided to offer frank maternal counsel.
"Look at a person who is pushing you, a person who is demanding, a person who is giving you conditions," she advised him. "I don't think that girl loves you.”
She challenged him to consider his long-term happiness rather than acting out of panic.
"Do you want to live like this for the rest of your life?" she asked. She added, "Is this the kind of life you want to have?"
Gituro made it clear that the choice remained entirely his.
"I'm not telling you to leave this girl, but think about it," she told him. "Whatever you choose, I'll support.”

Moving On and Family Background
The relationship officially ended two to three months later. Gituro revealed that Jakes eventually moved on and later introduced a new partner to her.
Gituro is a mother of three children aged 32, 24, and 22[1]. She raised her family independently after separating from her former partner 18 years ago.
Her media career spans over two decades, including 17 years at Royal Media Services before moving to MediaMax Network.
