Rolls of bhang recovered/NPS

Police in Kiambu County have arrested three suspects and seized 483 rolls of cannabis sativa in two intelligence-led operations targeting the distribution and trafficking of narcotics.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the operations were conducted on October 12, 2026, by officers from Kibiku and Kimuchu police stations.

In Wangige Town, officers from Kibiku Police Station acted on a tip-off and arrested two suspects allegedly distributing cannabis sativa.

A search conducted following the arrests led to the recovery of 73 rolls of bhang from the suspects. Officers subsequently searched their hideout, where they discovered an additional 307 rolls.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 380 rolls of bhang and approximately 10 grams of unprocessed cannabis sativa.

In a separate operation targeting the Corner One area, officers from Kimuchu Police Station arrested another suspect found in possession of 103 rolls of cannabis sativa.

The three suspects were taken to their respective police stations and placed in lawful custody pending processing and arraignment in court. The seized drugs were secured as exhibits.

The arrests come amid renewed calls for stronger enforcement against illicit substances and alcohol, with Parliament recently proposing tougher penalties and better coordination among agencies involved in combating illegal trade.

On October 10, the National Assembly's Petitions Committee recommended a series of measures to strengthen the government's response to illicit alcohol, including tighter controls on ethanol production and distribution, improved border surveillance and harmonised national and county licensing rules.

The committee also proposed the formation of a multi-agency team to coordinate enforcement efforts against the trade.

Its recommendations followed a petition by Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Boss on behalf of her constituents. The committee wants the government to report on progress within 90 days of the National Assembly adopting its recommendations.

The report highlighted concerns over the scale of illicit trade and its impact on government revenue, legitimate businesses and public safety.

It also identified weak enforcement, corruption, porous borders and high taxes on legal alcohol as factors contributing to the persistence of illegal trade.

The National Police Service reported 35,700 arrests and the seizure of 1.56 million litres of illicit brew between January 2024 and May 2026. Of the seized volume, 949,800 litres were destroyed.

In its latest update, the service said it remained committed to sustaining operations against illicit drugs and brews across the country.

The Kiambu operations form part of these enforcement efforts, with the suspects awaiting further processing and court proceedings.
