Congolese Rhumba legend Koffi Olomide turned heads in Nairobi at the weekend. The 70-year-old Congolese star arrived at Fred Obachi Machoka’s 50th anniversary celebration in an outfit that quickly became the talking point.
The look
The rhumba veteran made an entrance in a bright white blouse and bold monochrome stripes. A black hat sat on top, while the gold jewellery caught the light and the attention of the room.
A packed day of rhumba
The concert ran from noon to midnight on 10 October 2026. It was held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, with Mbilia Bel and Sam Fan Thomas also on the bill.

A packed crowd of rhumba fans and media enthusiasts came to honor one of Kenya’s most celebrated broadcasters. The Media Council of Kenya recognized Machoka on 9 July for reaching 50 years in broadcasting.
Rooted in La Sape
Olomide was born Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba on 13 July 1956. He popularized a flamboyant fashion subculture called La Sape, alongside Papa Wemba.
La Sape is a Congolese tradition of dressing sharply and with flair. For its followers, clothes are a form of expression.
Footwork and stage presence
Olomide kept the audience on their feet throughout his set. His signature soukous footwork and commanding presence drove the energy in the arena.

Nairobi knows his live shows well. He headlined the sold-out Koroga Festival at Arboretum Gardens in 2016, performing for almost two hours.
