Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has warned that excessive reliance on money in politics threatens Kenya’s democracy ahead of the 2027 General Election. Nyong’o said wealthy candidates risk buying their way into elective positions, undermining meaningful participation by ordinary citizens. Speaking at a memorial conference for Raila Odinga, he called for reforms in political financing and electoral institutions, arguing that democracy cannot flourish when access to political leadership depends excessively on wealth rather than public support.
