The National Youth Service (NYS) has moved to reassure Kenyans over a viral video showing its officers involved in an altercation with a civilian passenger, saying the incident is not recent.
The service said the video currently circulating on social media relates to an incident that occurred two years ago and was dealt with at the time.
According to NYS, the matter was promptly brought to the attention of the relevant authorities, with disciplinary action taken against the two officers involved.
“The National Youth Service (NYS) is aware of a video currently circulating on social media depicting an altercation involving an NYS officer and a civilian,” the service said in a statement.
NYS urged members of the public not to be misled by the recirculation of the footage, which could create the impression that the incident had occurred recently.
“The service wishes to clarify that the incident is not recent. The matter occurred two years ago and was promptly brought to the attention of the relevant authorities and appropriately dealt with in accordance with established procedures,” it said.
The clarification comes amid increased attention on the conduct of security and disciplined service officers, with videos of alleged misconduct often attracting widespread reactions after being shared online.
NYS said it does not condone violence, misconduct or abuse of authority by its personnel.
“The NYS is a disciplined service founded on respect for the law, professionalism, integrity and responsible conduct,” it said.
It added that any conduct by its personnel that goes against these principles is addressed through the appropriate administrative and legal mechanisms.
“Any conduct inconsistent with these values is addressed through the appropriate administrative and legal mechanisms,” the Service said.
NYS further appealed to Kenyans to exercise caution when consuming and sharing old videos on social media, particularly where their recirculation could create a false impression about current events.
“Members of the public are therefore urged not to be alarmed or misled by the recirculation of this old video as though it were a recent incident,” the Service said.
The service maintained that the matter had been addressed when it occurred and said it remained committed to maintaining high standards of discipline and professionalism among its officers.
“The matter was addressed at the time, and the Service remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of discipline and professionalism among its personnel,” it added.
NYS thanked members of the public for their continued confidence and partnership with the Service.
