Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has backed President William Ruto’s bid for re-election in 2027.

In a post on X on Friday, October 2, Muhoozi said he was appointing National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula as his “Mutume” in Kenya, indicating that he would act as his representative in the country.

“Now that I have enough Batume in Uganda, I appoint Rt. Honourable Moses Wetangula as my Mutume in Kenya. He will support my President @WilliamsRuto's re-election. Tunataka Second term,” Muhoozi wrote.

His remarks come amid the military chief’s stepped-up presidential ambitions, with Muhoozi declaring that he expects to secure 90 per cent of the vote in Uganda’s 2031 election with the backing of his father, President Yoweri Museveni.

Muhoozi made the remarks in a post on X on August 26, 2026, alongside a photograph of himself with Museveni.

“With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031,” Muhoozi wrote.

The declaration came days after the military chief publicly announced his intention to seek Uganda’s highest office in 2031.

In another post, Muhoozi said he would “stand for the highest office in the land in 2031” and expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious.

“Let’s take a quick poll; all those who will vote for me in 2031 retweet and like,” Muhoozi tweeted.

His recent statement amounts to a public expression of support for Ruto’s re-election bid by the Ugandan military chief.

Muhoozi’s remarks come as political activity around the 2027 General Election continues to gather pace in Kenya, with Wetang’ula among senior leaders publicly campaigning for Ruto to secure a second term.

The National Assembly Speaker has in recent months intensified his mobilisation efforts, particularly in Western Kenya, where he has urged residents to back Ruto and his administration.

In September, Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to assess Ruto’s development record as they prepare for the 2027 polls.

Speaking during a funeral service on September 21, Wetang’ula defended the President’s re-election bid and argued that voters should focus on the government’s development record.

He has also used public engagements in Western Kenya to rally support for the President.

In July, Wetang’ula called on residents in the region to support Ruto’s re-election, citing developments in areas including infrastructure, healthcare and the revival of key industries.

The Speaker has also urged eligible Kenyans who have not registered as voters to do so ahead of the registration deadline, as political parties and leaders step up mobilisation across the country.

Wetang’ula’s public backing of Ruto has placed him among the senior Kenya Kwanza leaders campaigning for the President’s second-term bid, with the Speaker frequently defending the administration’s record at public gatherings.
