The family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has announced Migwena Grounds as the venue for celebrations marking the first anniversary of his death on October 15.

The family said preparations for the event are at an advanced stage, with the grounds undergoing final touches ahead of the celebrations.

It indicated a mausoleum for Raila is also being constructed at the site and is expected to be unveiled on the same day as the anniversary.

The family said the mausoleum has been built within two months and is now nearing completion ahead of its official unveiling on October 15.

The unveiling of the mausoleum will be among the key activities planned for the first anniversary of Raila’s death.

Migwena Grounds was selected due of its special significance to the former Prime Minister, who valued the area and regularly attended sporting activities there.

Raila was also a regular attendee at India sports games held at the grounds, according to a family representative.

This informed Migwena as a place of spiritual and cultural importance.

The family said the venue holds memories that made it an appropriate location to commemorate Raila’s life and legacy.

“Raila valued Migwena so much. He used to attend most of our India sports games. It’s a holy place we value so much, that’s why we are going to do the anniversary in that field,” the representative said.

The October 15 event is expected to bring together family members, friends and members of the public to commemorate Raila’s life and reflect on his contribution to the country.

The family said preparations at Migwena Grounds were nearing completion, with several activities planned for the occasion.

It said the anniversary would provide an opportunity for those attending to pray and remember Raila’s life, including his struggles and achievements over the years.

The representative also invited members of the public to attend the celebrations, saying Raila was loved by people across different sections of society.

“Things are ready and there are going to be many activities taking place. We welcome everybody on that occasion because Raila was loved by everybody,” he said.

The anniversary will also provide an opportunity for the family to come together and remember the former Prime Minister, with his relatives describing the occasion as a moment of unity.

The mausoleum unveiling is expected to give added significance to the October 15 commemorations, as the family prepares to formally unveil the site where Raila’s memory will be commemorated.

Raila died on October 15, 2025, and the anniversary will mark one year since his death. The first anniversary celebrations are expected to combine prayers, remembrance and activities celebrating his life, struggles and achievements.
