Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has addressed the National Defence College, Karen, on role of citizen engagement (Jukwaa la Usalama) as a strategic pillar of national security.

Citizen engagement is increasingly recognised as an important pillar of national security because a secure country depends not only on the strength of its security agencies but also on the confidence and cooperation of its people.

When citizens trust public institutions and feel that their concerns are heard, they are more likely to share information, cooperate with authorities and participate in efforts to prevent crime, violence and other threats.

Effective engagement can also help security agencies identify emerging risks before they escalate.

Communities are often the first to notice changes in their environment, including organised criminal activity, tensions between groups, radicalisation or threats to critical infrastructure.

Establishing credible channels through which citizens can report concerns enables authorities to respond earlier while building stronger relationships with communities.
