More than 30 African countries are expected to send over 300 elite cyclists for the continental competition set to take place in Kisumu county from October 21 to 25.
Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the Confederation of African Cycling Championship will feature 15 race categories, with the action set to be broadcast live across Kenya and internationally.
Nyong’o said the event is expected to boost the county’s hospitality and tourism sectors while creating opportunities for young people in areas including event management, transport, catering and security.
The governor said Kisumu expects the championship to generate more than 1.8 million social media impressions and nearly 90,000 engagements, putting the county on the global stage.
“This is not just a race. This is an economic injection into our county’s veins. This is tourism reborn. This is Kisumu to the World,” Nyong’o said.
He said residents will also have an opportunity to participate through a social fun ride that will be open to families, friends and cycling enthusiasts.
Nyong’o thanked the Kenya Cycling Federation for selecting Kisumu to host the continental championship.
“The world is coming. Let us welcome them the Kisumu way with warmth, pride and unstoppable energy,” he said.
